Even the most basic items are now connected to an app, from cushions to scales. One of the strangest inventions in the “smart” device category is the electric toothbrush.

However, toothbrushes—smart or not—only serve to clean your teeth. According to the American Dental Association, as long as you develop the practise of brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time with a bristle brush, both manual and electric toothbrushes will promote good oral health.

After testing several brushes for a few weeks, I have come to the conclusion that they are not necessary for everyone, but can be beneficial for some, especially those who react to the game play into their daily routines.

Brush mechanism whether round or rectangular, all brush heads vibrate, producing tens of thousands of movements per minute. All handles emit tactile jerks and pauses to let you know to switch to another tooth and when your session is over.

Most of these electric toothbrushes come with batteries that last several weeks on a single charge or, in the case of Quip non-rechargeable, months with a disposable battery pack.

Premium brushes, usually the type which costs over $200, also includes internal sensors that can detect the direction of the brush in your mouth as well as the movement and pressure you use.

The brush uses this information to notify you if you’re pressing too hard, moving too quickly, or missing certain areas, with feedback in the form of lights, vibrations, or in-app communication.

Some brushes even have small built-in screens that can give you a lot of information like an app, such as mode selection, timer duration, and a simple session rating, so you don’t have to keep your phone with you.
